3 Sisters Companion Planting – My first video!

Welcome to my very first gardening video! In this debut episode, I dive into the beautiful tradition of Three Sisters companion planting — a time-honored Native American method that combines corn, beans, and squash to grow together in harmony. 🌽🌱🎃

🌿 What is “Three Sisters” planting?

The “Three Sisters” refers to planting corn (maize), climbing beans, and squash together in the same patch. Each plant supports and benefits the others in a unique way. The cornstalk serves as a natural trellis for the beans to climb, the beans naturally add nitrogen to the soil (which nourishes all the plants), and the sprawling squash vines spread out to shade the soil, suppress weeds, and retain moisture.

This inter-cropping method is a classic example of companion planting and polyculture — growing multiple crops together to mimic the diversity and cooperation found in natural ecosystems.

🌱 Why I chose this method for my first video

  • It’s sustainable and natural: you don’t need complicated equipment or heavy chemical fertilizers — just soil, seeds, and care. The “Three Sisters” method enhances soil fertility naturally and helps deter weeds.
  • It’s a beautiful tradition: This planting technique originates from Indigenous agriculture in North America and has been used for centuries to support communities.
  • It’s perfect for home gardens—even small ones: You can adapt this method to small spaces, raised beds, or traditional garden beds, making it accessible whether you have a big plot or a modest patio garden.

✅ What you’ll see in the video

  • How to prepare soil and garden mounds for planting corn, beans, and squash together.
  • The planting timeline and spacing needed to give each “sister” room to grow and support each other healthily.
  • Tips and tricks for watering, maintenance, and caring for a mixed garden patch — especially useful for first-time gardeners like me.
  • My reflections on why this traditional method still matters today — for soil health, biodiversity, and sustainable home gardening.

I’m excited to share this journey with you, whether you’re a first-time gardener or you’ve been growing veggies for years. If you enjoy this video, please like, subscribe, and comment — tell me if you try the “Three Sisters” method in your own garden! I’d love to hear about your experience.

Thanks for watching, and happy gardening! 🌿
